What we report

Surgical and cytology specimens, reported with a written diagnosis.

Histopathology

Biopsies and surgical resection specimens — processed, sectioned, stained and reported with a written diagnosis.

Cytopathology

Cellular material reported within 24 hours in most cases.

Every histopathology and cytopathology report from this laboratory is read and signed by Dr. Malhotra. Reporting under a named pathologist has been how this lab has worked since 1996.

Sending a specimen

Most reporting delays and rejected specimens come from these six things.

  1. Fix immediately in 10% neutral buffered formalin. A specimen left in air or in saline dries or autolyses and may become unreportable. Do not freeze tissue intended for histopathology.
  2. Use at least ten times the volume of the specimen in fixative, in a container wide enough to remove the specimen without damaging it.
  3. Label the container itself — not only the lid — with the patient's name, age, sex, the specimen site and the date and time of collection.
  4. Send the requisition with clinical history: the clinical question, relevant imaging, and any previous biopsy or report on the same site. A diagnosis made without history is a diagnosis made with one hand tied.
  5. Keep multiple specimens in separate, separately labelled containers. Sites cannot be reliably separated once they share a pot.
  6. Send small biopsies in small containers so the tissue is not lost against the wall of an oversized pot, and tell us if the specimen is tiny.

If a specimen arrives inadequately fixed, mislabelled or without history, we will call you rather than report on it. Unsure about a particular specimen? Message us before you take it.
